LYRICS

Who's that sittin' in the back yard tree?
Sittin' up pretty for the world to see
And who's that reachin' for the watermelon plate
Smile now, papa, she's your watermelon babe
Sweet red sugar with the green, green rind
Two fisted eatin' and she's one of a kind
Baby's on a roll and she ain't gonna wait
So smile now, papa, she's your watermelon babe

Now you can call her your apple, you can call her your peach
But when that summer watermelon is within her reach
It's the only thing that she's a-gonna crave
So smile now, papa, she's your watermelon babe
Who's givin' papa a great big kiss?
Share that sugar, call it watermelon bliss

She's your party baby, she's your cutie pie
And she knows papa's givin' her his lovin' eyes
And who's that reaching for another taste
Smile now, papa, she's your watermelon babe
Buy her a doll or buy her a pony
Now don't be thinking she'll love you only
Someone's waitin' to take her heart away
But she will always be your watermelon babe

You can call her your apple, you can call her your peach
But when that summer watermelon is within her reach
It's the only thing that she's a-gonna crave
So smile now, papa, she's your watermelon babe
Who's givin' papa a great big kiss?
Share that sugar, call it watermelon bliss

THE STORY

Little Miss Peach (aka Anita, daughter of my dear friend, singer/guitarist Ricardo Valenzuela) may be been inappropriately nicknamed. At a summer party in 2002 I photographed her "sitting up pretty in the backyard tree," and then she made a bee-line for the watermelon. With two hands. As fast as she could shovel it in. This wasn't the only time Miss Peach had staked out her claim to the summer watermelon trough. That same summer our Watermelon Babe packed down a half a watermelon in my backyard too.

My friend, singer/songwriter Tam Katzin, also a long-time family friend of the Watermelon Babe, laid down a loving vocal track in the studio while Miss WB danced with her mother and made her proud papa smile.
