LYRICS
Blend cool, cool blues of the ocean
With passion of a deep red wine
Blue ice with embers of a glowing fire
Flood my senses with color sublime
While I dream in aubergine...
Ultramarine, red lava flow
Color to soothe my soul
Violet hues of a storm's rainbow
Purple cloaking the sunset's gold
While I dream in aubergine...
Kings and flowers clad in purple gowns
Aubergine and mystery
Satin and velvet, wrap me in heavenly color
Love me and let me dream in aubergine...
Kings and flowers clad in purple gowns
Aubergine and mystery
Satin and velvet, wrap me in heavenly color
Hold me and let me dream in aubergine...
Swirling cool blues of the ocean
With passion of a deep red wine Sweet desire with fire and ice
Drink a toast and hold me close
And let me dream in aubergine...

THE STORY
Somewhere over the Pacific Ocean on a flight from Australia to Vancouver BC, I wrote the lyrics for a song about the color purple. High in the air with the blues of the ocean below me, and high on red wine, I had created a sensuous journey through my favorite colors of passion and romance. But once I came down to earth I realized that "purple" was such an ugly word, and the song was filed away for future inspiration. When we began the Late Bloomer project, I rediscovered my lyrics and decided to search for a better word. So when I found the French word "aubergine" in the dictionary (meaning "eggplant" but also described as "a shade of purple") the song was born. Hooked into my Fender Rhodes piano patch, the music flowed from brain to fingertips at around 2:30 am and had the feel that I wanted... I am a huge fan of jazz vocalist Greta Matassa, so I asked Greta to record the vocal for the Late Bloomer CD.
